Part of Ollie n Amber
We specialise in sympathetically restoring antique wooden Rocking Horses
(such as G&J Lines, Triang, Smith, Swallow, Collinsons and Ayres) to their
former glory using traditional techniques. During our restoration process,
we restore rocking horses to as near original condition as possible while
keeping and using many original parts and features. Using the highest
quality materials, each rocking horse is restored with the utmost care, part
of the skill lying in assessing the appropriate extent and style of
restoration.
The first process is to hopefully identify the original Rocking Horse Maker and approximate date the horse was made, then we can recommend the most appropriate course of restoration for your particular horse. Each horse is assessed on a completely individual basis, however a new mane and tail are usually a requirement, often the saddle and bridle will need replacing. Our experienced in-house leather craft-workers can replicate the original tack from the horse. It is common to see cracks, chips and damage to the exterior of the Rocking Horse - this can sometimes just be surface work but may also indicate that full structural repairs need to be undertaken.
We will do as little as possible to your horse to restore it to its former self, however we can undertake re-carving and structural repairs when necessary. Throughout the restoration process, we take photographs of the work being done and present this to you with a description of the restoration when your horse is complete.
If you are lucky enough to own a rocking horse made during the golden era
of rocking horse making, such as an FH Ayres or Lines (Triang) these horses
may be the most valuable, but they are often in a poor state of repair.
Don't worry - there is not yet a Rocking Horse we haven't managed to repair!
Very often we have come across some potentially very valuable antique
rocking horses which have been ruined by unprofessional restoration
techniques. When you entrust your rocking horse to us, we guarantee that it
will be dealt with in the most sympathetic and professional manner.
